PORCELAIN CROWNS
A dental crown fits over the entire tooth and is used to repair the tooth in when it has large areas of decay, large fillings, or is severely damaged. Crowns are also sometimes used after a root canal procedure is performed to preserve the integrity and strength of the natural tooth structure that remains. If the damage to a tooth is so severe that a filling is unable to fix it, a crown may be used.
Dental crowns can also be used for cosmetic dentistry purposes, and can straighten teeth or change their color, shape, or size. Crowns can also be used to close gaps between teeth.
Using old technology, a crown needed to have a metal base in order to be secure. Today, stable and secure crowns can be crafted from all porcelain or ceramic. Porcelain crowns, when done by an expert cosmetic dentist, can look so real that it can be difficult to tell the restored tooth from the surrounding natural teeth. Since they don't need a metal foundation, they can be translucent and natural-looking. To be strong enough, they require using a sophisticated bonding technology that many dentists aren't familiar with.
