Are your gums uneven, too thick, too high, or too low? Your smile can be enhanced with the help of an artistic cosmetic dentist.
Gum contouring, also referred to as gum tissue sculpting or gum reshaping, can shape your gums and enhance your smile. Gum grafting is used when gums recede.
Genetics, medication, age, hormonal changes, and periodontal (gum) disease, are all factors that can affect the appearance of your gum tissue. The tissue can be excessive, uneven, or recede. In any of these cases, a cosmetic dentist can help in just one appointment.
Gum contouring
Gum contouring is a cosmetic procedure. In most cases, it is not medically necessary, so if you have dental insurance, it will provide little, if any, coverage for the procedure.
Contouring is completed in the dentist’s office. Usually, only one appointment is required. A dental laser is used to remove excess gum tissue and reshape your gums. It cauterizes as it cuts, to assist in the healing process.
The affected area will be numbed prior to treatment. Most patients find that the procedure is pain free. During the healing period, avoid foods that are hard, crunch, or sticky. Gently floss between your teeth and brush them.
Gum grafting
Hormonal changes, aggressive tooth brushing, or periodontal disease can cause gum recession. If you have too little gum tissue, grafting may be needed. Grafts can cover exposed tooth roots and reduce sensitivity in teeth and protect them from decay. The tissue can be taken from your palate or a donor source.
Before you select a dentist to graft or contour gum tissue, check his or her credentials and experience. Ask how many cases the dentist has completed. You can also request to see before-and-after pictures of cases that the dentist has completed.
