Technology
Dr. Hurley takes pride in offering the most advanced technology available in cosmetic dentistry. Current technology enables Dr. Hurley to detect potential problems sooner, enhance documentation for insurance purposes, increase patient understanding, and improve patient comfort during difficult procedures.
Digital X-rays
Digital x-rays are state-of-the-art computerized images that appear on the computer screen within seconds. The x-rays help diagnose cavities, periodontal problems, abscessed teeth, and oral cancer. The digital equipment is so sophisticated it can enlarge one area of the tooth for accurate diagnosis.
There is 90% less radiation exposure than you get with film x-rays. We still cover you with a lead apron and a cervical collar in order to further prevent any exposure to radiation.
CariVu™ – Caries Detection Device
DEXIS™ CariVu™ is a compact, portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks.
What makes CariVu unique?
- Uses transillumination technology that makes enamel appear transparent while porous lesions trap and absorb light
- Allows the clinician to see through the tooth, exposing its structure and the actual structure of any carious lesions
- CariVu images read like familiar x-ray images
- Uses non-ionizing radiation which is ideal for children, pregnant women and patients who are x-ray averse
Intraoral Cameras
The intraoral camera is a sophisticated imaging device that maintains your comfort while Dr. Hurley takes close-up images of the inside of your mouth. This device allows Dr. Hurley to detect problems such as decay, broken fillings, and cracked teeth earlier than they would otherwise become apparent. The camera is only about half an inch in diameter, so it’s much more comfortable for the patient than traditional imaging devices.
Dr. Hurley uses the intraoral camera at every checkup to stay on top of potential problems with your oral health. This allows Dr. Hurley to take a more proactive approach to handling any problems before they cause you discomfort. This camera is also useful for providing images to your insurance company to verify problems and help get your claims approved. The intra-oral camera projects the close-up images onto a large color screen that both you and Dr. Hurley will be able to see, so she will be able to better explain any problems she sees or procedures she will do.
Oral Cancer Screening
During the dental examination, abnormal tissue, which can be white or red in color, can be detected and tested if necessary. One of the most curable diseases, when treated early, is oral cancer; however, roughly 70% of the time, oral cancer goes unseen until it is in the advanced stage.
Dr. Hurley takes that extra precautionary step as part of the patient’s visual examination. By adding this oral cancer screening procedure to the patient examination, Dr. Hurley could very well help save your or your loved one’s life someday.
Intraoral/Portrait Photography
Dr. Hurley will take a complete set of digital photographs of your teeth, a full set of digital x-rays, and models of your teeth to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for your specific cosmetic dentistry needs. The photographs help Dr. Hurley determine the shape, size, and relationship of your teeth, and communicate with the lab.
A consultation is then scheduled to discuss your different options and your personal preferences. Before-and-after photographs are always a vital part of the cosmetic case.
Dr. Hurley also teaches oral/portrait photography to her peers, and she has a small professional studio set up in her office to take before-and-after photographs of her work. Dr. Hurley also enjoys nature and landscape photography, and has examples of her photos proudly displayed throughout her office.
