New Jersey Composite Fillings
Mercury-Free, Tooth Colored Fillings for Posterior Teeth
Composite is a tooth colored filling material that is used to repair decayed, chipped or cracked teeth. The composite filling is bonded directly to the tooth using advanced adhesive technology, which helps strengthen and reinforce the tooth. Tooth colored composite fillings look very natural, so no one will know your tooth has been restored. Composite fillings are used for small or medium sized fillings in posterior teeth.
Your back teeth need to withstand a lot of stress from chewing. The metal fillings are made of silver and mercury, and the material itself is strong enough to withstand this stress. Because this type of filling is not bonded directly to the natural teeth, teeth filled with amalgam are actually not as strong. Sometimes with a silver filling, either the tooth, filling or both will crack and break.
Composite fillings do not contain mercury, and because they are bonded directly to the tooth, strengthen the tooth structure and do not crack as easily. Composite fillings can be placed without removing as much of the natural tooth structure, and result in less sensitivity to hot and cold than amalgam fillings.
